BERLIN’S NIGHTLIFE: WHAT TO VISIT?

April 14, 2022 | Sarah Funky

The capital of Germany, Berlin, is a go-to place for tourists worldwide. One of its most unique qualities is its lively and vibrant nightlife. Berlin has perfected the art of a night out, and people from all walks of life can find something appealing to do in Berlin. The city’s nightlife scene has been described as exhilarating, freaky, surreal, and even addicting, but its best quality is its diversity. However, Berlin’s nightlife can sometimes feel oversaturated because of its rising popularity and the influx of tourists. This is why we’ve combined all the best spots and activities you should put on your itinerary when visiting Berlin for a fun night out.

Berghain & Panorama Bar

Let’s start with the classics. Berghain has been on top of the must-visit clubs in Berlin and the world for many years, and for a good reason. It’s quite common for people from other countries to go to Berlin so that they can party at Berghain for the night. Even if you are not the biggest fan of clubs, you should definitely hit up Berghain or try when you are in Berlin.

Located in a building that used to serve as a power plant, this world-famous club is now an essential part of Berlin culture and history. However, you should keep in mind that getting into Berghain is no joke. There are websites and forums dedicated to figuring out the club’s strict entry policy logic, but no one has yet managed to pin down the exact formula. But if you’re one of the lucky ones, who manages to get inside, you’ll experience Berghain’s world-class music system under an 18-meter high ceiling.

Tresor

Tresor is often hailed as a trailblazer for Berlin’s clubbing scene. It first opened in 1991, soon after East and West Germany reunited, and has carried the intense spirit of that time. This is another famous techno underground club, and its original building used to be a department store which explains the unconventional interior and extensive hallways that characterized Tresor. However, because of some legal trouble regarding the club’s lease, Tresor moved to a decommissioned power plant building and has stayed there ever since. One of Tresor’s trademark features is that DJs are behind jail bars, which almost makes sense considering the eclectic nature of the club. We should also mention that Tresor’s entry policy, while still strict, is a bit more relaxed compared to Berghain.

Kater Blau

While we promised to deliver Berlin’s nightlife gems, this club is open all day hours during the weekend. Kater Blau is located on the banks of the Spree and hosts world-famous DJs regularly. If you think that you can party 24 hours straight, there’s no better place to go than Kater Blau. The club has a bar where you can grab a cocktail or a beer and enjoy the music and the pretty view of the Spree river.

Schwarzes Cafe

No night out on the town can be complete without a nice meal. Berlin has plenty to offer for 24-hour restaurants, but this one deserves a special place on our list. Schwarzes Cafe opened in the 70s and has been a go-to for expats and the members of Berlin’s art scene ever since. It is not just the fact that this cafe has been around for so long; its popularity also has to do with its diverse and delicious menu. The cafe serves breakfast options all day and night and has an impressive selection of organic meats and classics like strudels, milkshakes, and various homemade desserts. Incorporate the Schwarzes Cafe into your night adventures, and you won’t be disappointed.

Madame Claude

If you don’t want to limit yourself to techno clubs, you can also hit up Madame Claud at night. This is an alternative bar that used to be a brothel, but now it is a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else other than in Berlin. The decor is all upside down, so you feel like sitting on the ceiling when ordering a drink at the bar. Graffiti covers the entire interior, and there are numerous indie musicians, bands, and solo performers lining up for a gig on any given evening.

How to stay safe while partying in Berlin

Berlin has perfected the art of partying, so there aren’t too many pressing issues you need to worry about when going out in Berlin. However, the one safety tip that frequently gets overlooked is using public Wi-Fi in these popular nightlife destinations. During the night, you may have to contact your friend and find your way to the next location, and you may have to use public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks, especially in crowded spaces like those mentioned here, are dangerous since they are vulnerable to outside attacks. If you connect to a compromised network, a hacker could gain access to your connection and therefore mess with your accounts or devices. To protect yourself against such attacks, it’s always best to use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi if you don’t have a choice for a safer connection. This way, your IP address will remain hipped, and a VPN will ensure that your accounts don’t get compromised.
