What No One Tells You About Positano

January 25, 2020 | Sarah Funky

If you think of Italy and picturesque Italian towns, then you might be thinking about Positano. Situated on the Amalfi Coast, this charming little town is every traveler’s or Instagrammer’s dream come true. With a mild climate, a multitude of colorful houses stacked on a hill, one next to the other, and that laid-back holiday type of vibe, Positano is the perfect destination for a city break. But before booking your trip, you might want to consider these things that no one tells you about this charming town – as well as where to stay in Positano so that you get the best out of your trip!

GETTING THERE

Believe it or not, getting there is not as easy as you might be thinking. But this can be understandable given the fact that this secluded little town is situated in the coastal area of Amalfi, and it is a hilltop type of town.

The nearest major city is Naples. From there, depending on your budget and the comfort level you want to experience, you can either rent a car or hire a driver and drive for one hour and a half. You can also take the direct train to Sorrento, and from there you can hop on a local bus to your final destination, Positano. You can even take the ferry while enjoying some of the best crystal-clear water you have ever seen. You can also search for yachts for rent in Italy if you prefer privacy and want to try sailing with your family.

BE PREPARED TO WALK

The second thing you want to consider is the fact that you have to be prepared to walk. A lot. Given the nature of the town, and its size of just 8.65 km2 (3.34 sq mi), public transportation is not an option. You have to be prepared to walk along narrow cobbled streets, climb steep stairs, and avoid falling accidentally.

Yes, as beautiful as it can be, Positano can also be very challenging for those whose physique is not used to such activities. The whole town sits almost horizontally; the stairs are cut into the hill and are as steep as a ladder. Make sure to bring comfy shoes with you. Avoid wearing high heels as much as possible, especially if you want to wander around. And honestly, who would not want to wander around Positano?

BEWARE OF THE HORDES OF TOURISTS

As you have probably guessed it, Positano has made a name for itself worldwide. And thanks to social media, this architectural gem of a town did not stay hidden from the hordes of tourists for long. Hundreds of thousands of tourists come to Positano every year to experience its beauty with their own eyes.

Majority of the time, you can barely hear any Italian, other than from the few locals or merchants. Waking up early or visiting during the off-season period can help if you want to live a more authentic experience.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Overall, Positano is a great place to visit if you want to get a taste of that Italian dolce vita. With this being said, you can already start searching where to stay in Positano and make sure that you’ll avoid walking too much to get somewhere, as well as the hordes of tourists that you are very likely to meet!
