If you want to live in a fast-paced city, where creativity and a 24-hour lifestyle combine, New York could be the perfect place for you to relocate to. Here are some helpful tips for moving there.

Spend time there first

It makes sense to spend time in New York before taking the plunge and moving. This could include several extended vacations, but if your working conditions are flexible and allow you to, you could live there and work remotely for a while.

If you do decide to move, you can use Compass and work with one of their experienced agents. They have a range of homes to rent in Brooklyn that could match all your requirements and because their machine learning software helps with pricing homes, you can be sure you’re not paying more rent than you would for similar homes in the area.

Learn to use the subway to get around

In NYC you need to be prepared to use the subway to get around. If you currently live in a smaller city, you may be accustomed to walking or driving. However, using the subway can be less stressful, more convenient, and will often be cheaper than driving. Because New York is exceptionally busy, there can be a lot of congestion and delays when traveling by car.

Be prepared for higher costs

You should also be prepared for the higher cost of living. Although this shouldn’t affect your decision on whether to move to New York, it can help to do some research and plan how you might manage your spending. There will be some places to buy essentials at better prices, but it could take a while to find these. The more time you spend in New York, the more familiar you will become with the local businesses and the best places to shop.

Be prepared to declutter

Many places in New York have less space than in other areas, so you should be prepared to de-clutter. This isn’t always a bad thing, as our belongings can accumulate and we often forget how much we have and never use. If you move to New York, you might end up living in a smaller home, but the upside is getting to live in an exciting city where there is always something going on.

Know where to escape the crowds

Even if you love living in a busy city, there will be times when you want to escape the crowds. There are some fantastic places you can visit when there are fewer tourists around, depending on the time of day. For example, if you take the Staten Island Ferry between 10AM and 3PM or after 7PM during the week, it will be quieter than other times of the day. You may also want to visit the New York Botanical Garden, which does get a lot of visitors but as its spread across 250 acres, you should be able to find a quiet spot to escape the crowds.

Moving to New York can be a big lifestyle change, depending on where you have lived previously. A little planning and preparation can help you settle in and thrive in this bustling city.
